In a previous email, I shared this story about a senior editor and me working as his assistant around 20 years ago.
First, he was my teacher in analog and digital editing. Later became one of my greatest mentors and remains my biggest influence until today!
One of the most memorable answers he ever gave me was in response to a 'fear' of mine, expressed openly in class.
To put you in context, let me outline the period for you!
- When I started in video editing, around 2002, a transition was happening in Greece.
- We were moving from analog (linear) to digital (non-linear) video editing, and most importantly, digital editing systems were starting to become cheaper and cheaper.
In comparison, today, we are moving away from using only traditional editing tools towards using all the latest AI tools. In the meantime, everyone has some exposure to them, so their use is not restricted only to professional video editors but is widely spread to hobbyists, too!
- Back in 2002, I noticed a trend. PCs were becoming cheaper, and specialized editing software, like AVID Media Composer, was more affordable for hobbyists.
- Of course, I can't ignore Adobe's PremierePro, which was not in a subscription pricing model back then, so it was way more affordable, IMHO!
So, given all the above, a question formed in my mind:
"If someone can afford a powerful PC and dedicated software, he could out-pace an experienced video editor by working in his pajamas straight from his living room.
So, dear teacher, aren't you afraid this rookie could start competing, offering the same amount of work, billing lower hourly rates, and eventually 'overtake' you?"
The answer was definitive:
"NO, I am not afraid of such a comparison.
I have gathered 30 years of video editing experience. This could not be weighed against any technology, regardless of the hourly price.
Someone can't provide the same value as I do, not because I am the best video editor in the world but because I am unique!
When someone is afraid, he tends to look back at his mirror. You can't go forward by looking backward.
Proceed with integrity and hard work, and you will be rewarded."
Here's the thing...
Every decade has its fears and worries!
Usually, they are the same but under a different name!
Reply with yours, if you have any, and I will try to help you!
Until then, I will continue to 'recycle' my mentor's advice through this newsletter, and I hope you get some answers!!
